Flame Retardant Ratings and Standards

UL 94 is the most widely used flammability rating for rubber and plastic parts. It measures how a material behaves when a small flame touches it — and, most importantly, what happens after the flame is removed. The ratings form a clear ladder:

Rating

Test Type

Requirement

What It Means

HB

Horizontal burn

Burns slower than the set limit, or stops before the 100 mm mark

Slow burning — the lowest level

V-2

Vertical burn

Stops burning within 30 seconds; flaming drips allowed

Self-extinguishing, but drips can spread fire

V-1

Vertical burn

Stops burning within 30 seconds; no flaming drips

Self-extinguishing, no drip risk

V-0

Vertical burn

Stops burning within 10 seconds; no flaming drips

The strictest common level — required for most electrical and safety parts

Two things buyers should know

ratings are thickness-dependent — a material can be V-0 at 3 mm but only V-1 at 1.5 mm, so always match the rating to your real gasket thickness. And beyond UL 94, many industries have their own fire standards: EN 45545 for railway vehicles, FAR 25.853 for aircraft interiors, and automotive OEM specifications.

At ZSR Silicone Parts, we formulate flame retardant silicone compounds to meet UL 94 V-0 and can work toward specific industry standards on request — tell us the standard and the thickness, and we will confirm the right compound before production.

An honest note

Flame retardant additives are mineral fillers, and they slightly reduce elasticity and tear strength compared with standard silicone. For most gasket jobs this makes no practical difference — but if your design needs maximum flexibility, tell us, and we will balance the formula.

The good news on smoke: silicone already burns cleaner than most rubbers — it produces no halogen gases and leaves a non-conductive silica ash. Our halogen-free flame retardant formula keeps that advantage while adding true self-extinguishing behavior.

Best Applications

Flame retardant silicone gaskets are specified wherever a seal sits close to electricity, fuel, or people:

Electrical enclosures and junction boxes

seals that must not feed a fault fire

Aerospace interiors

cabin and avionics seals meeting FAR 25.853

Appliances and lighting

anywhere a gasket sits near heaters, drivers, or ballasts

Mass transit vehicles

train, subway, and bus interior seals meeting EN 45545

Building construction

fire-rated door seals, curtain wall gaskets, HVAC fire damper seals

Industrial control panels

PLC cabinets, switchgear, and outdoor electrical cabinets

Battery packs and EV components

pack enclosures and module seals where thermal events must not spread

What Is Flame Retardant Silicone?

Flame retardant silicone is a specially formulated silicone rubber that refuses to keep burning. Standard silicone is a good material, but once ignited it will burn. Flame retardant silicone changes that behavior: special halogen-free additives are blended into the compound, and when the flame is removed, the material extinguishes itself — within seconds. The base is still true silicone, so the gasket keeps the temperature range, the weather resistance, and the flexibility silicone is known for. It simply adds one more layer of safety: when fire comes, it does not help the fire spread.

Key Properties of Flame Retardant Silicone

At ZSR Silicone Parts, LSR production follows a precise, automated process:

  • Self-Extinguishing — Stops burning on its own when the ignition source is removed, meeting UL 94 V-0 level performance.
  • Halogen-Free Formula — No bromine or chlorine compounds, so no toxic halogen gases are released in a fire — safer for people and for equipment.
  • Low Smoke, Low Toxicity — Silicone naturally produces little smoke, and burns down to a harmless, non-conductive silica ash.
  • Keeps Silicone's Core Strengths — Wide temperature range, UV and ozone resistance, and long-term flexibility all stay intact.
  • Electrically Safe — Remains an excellent insulator, making it ideal for sealing live electrical equipment.
  • Industry Standard Ready — Formulations available to meet UL 94 V-0, EN 45545 (rail), FAR 25.853 (aerospace), and other industry fire specifications.
