Custom Molded Silicone Gaskets
Manufacturer & Custom Solutions

Molded Silicone Gaskets

For three-dimensional gasket shapes, ZSR Silicone uses compression and injection molding. We build the mold, run first-article samples, and scale to production. Molded gaskets offer better corner sealing and integrated features than flat-cut parts.

Compression Molding vs. Injection Molding

At ZSR Silicone Parts, we run both compression molding and injection molding in our own factory. Each process has its strong points. This table helps you see the difference:

Factor

Compression Molding

Injection Molding (LSR / HCR)

Tooling Cost

Lower — simple mold design

Higher — mold with runner and gate system

Mold Lead Time

Shorter

Longer

Cycle Speed

Slower — manual loading

Fast — automatic cycles

Unit Cost

Higher at big volumes

Lower at big volumes

Best Order Size

Small to medium batches

Medium to very large runs

Part Complexity

Simple to medium shapes

Complex shapes, fine details

Flash / Waste

More flash, needs trimming

Very little flash

Tolerance

Good

Better, very stable part to part

Material Forms

Solid silicone (HCR), all grades

LSR or HCR compounds

Our advice

Choose compression molding for large gaskets, simple shapes, or smaller orders — it keeps your tooling budget low. Choose injection molding for high volumes, complex designs, or when you need the same size on every single part. Send us your drawing and order quantity, and our engineers will pick the right process for you — this advice is free.

When to Choose Molded Over Die Cut

Die cutting is great for flat gaskets. But molding is the better choice when your project needs more:

3D shapes

sealing lips, ribs, grooves, rounded edges, and curved cross-sections that a knife simply cannot cut

Tighter, more stable tolerances

the gasket thickness is set by the mold cavity, not by a sheet. Every part comes out the same, down to ±0.05–0.1 mm on key sizes

Any material you want

molding starts from raw compound, not from stock sheets. Food grade, medical grade, high temperature, conductive, or fluorosilicone — the choice is yours

Better sealing with less force

a round or lip-shaped cross-section seals with much lower closure force than a flat sheet gasket, so your housing will not bend or warp

Lower unit cost on big orders

once the mold is paid for, the cost per gasket drops fast, especially with multi-cavity molds

Fully cured material

each gasket cures inside the mold at the right time and temperature. This gives lower compression set and a longer seal life than standard sheet stock

Less waste at volume

die cutting leaves a lot of scrap around the cut shape. Molding uses almost only the material inside the part. At high volumes, this saves real money

Rule of thumb

If your gasket is flat and your order is small, die cut it. If your gasket has any 3D feature, or your yearly volume is large, molding will give you a better part at a better long-term price.

What Is a Molded Silicone Gasket?

A molded silicone gasket is a sealing part made by shaping raw silicone rubber inside a heated metal mold. The mold gives the gasket its exact shape, size, and surface — flat or 3D, simple or complex.

The process works like this. We place uncured silicone compound into the mold cavity, or inject it in as a liquid. The mold closes, and heat and pressure cure the silicone into its final form. When the mold opens, the gasket is done — with its shape locked in by the mold, accurate and repeatable from the first part to the millionth.

Unlike a die cut gasket, which is cut from a ready-made sheet, a molded gasket can have almost any shape. Sealing lips, ribs, grooves, rounded cross-sections, mounting tabs, and special profiles are all possible. This makes molded gaskets the first choice for demanding seals: enclosures that must keep water out, machines that run hot, and products where a leak is not an option.

Molded silicone gaskets keep all the natural strengths of silicone rubber. They work from -60°C to over 200°C, resist UV and ozone, stay flexible for years, and can be made in FDA food grade or medical grade compounds. With the right material, they can also handle fuel contact, high voltage insulation, or EMI shielding.

At ZSR Silicone Parts, we design and build our own molds in-house, and we run both compression and injection molding lines. That means faster tooling, better quality control, and a fair price for you. Send us your 2D drawing, 3D file, or a sample — we will give you a free DFM review and a quote, usually within 24 hours.
