Temperature Rating Comparison

Not all silicone gaskets handle heat the same way. The difference is in the formula — standard compounds versus compounds with heat stabilizers:

Continuous vs. short-term peak — the difference that decides gasket life.

Continuous means the temperature the gasket can hold for thousands of hours, for its whole service life, without losing hardness, strength, or sealing force. Short-term peak means a brief spike the gasket can survive and recover from — minutes to a few days, not months. A gasket held at its peak temperature permanently will slowly harden, shrink, and lose its seal. When you tell us your application, give us both numbers: the normal working temperature and the highest spike it will ever see. We will match the grade to both.

Hardness Selection for High Heat

Heat changes how a gasket behaves — and hardness is your first design tool to control it:

Silicone softens when it gets hot. A 40 Shore A gasket at 200°C behaves more like a 30 Shore A gasket. Under bolt load, a soft gasket at high temperature can squeeze out of the joint or take a permanent set much faster. That is why we recommend harder grades — 60 to 80 Shore A — for long-term hot applications. The extra hardness gives the gasket the body it needs to hold its shape and its sealing force when the temperature climbs.

Watch for the opposite long-term effect too. Over months of heat aging, silicone slowly hardens and gets less elastic — this is the normal aging path, and heat-stabilized grades slow it down. Starting with a slightly harder, heat-stabilized grade gives you the longest service life in hot service.

Our practical recommendations:

  • Below 150°C: any hardness works — choose by surface condition and bolt force
  • 150 – 230°C continuous: choose 60 – 80 Shore A, heat-stabilized grade
  • Above 230°C or long oven service: 70 – 80 Shore A, extreme high-temp grade, plus a thicker cross-section for extra sealing reserve

What Is High Temperature / Heat Resistant Silicone?

High temperature silicone is a specially formulated silicone rubber made to keep working where ordinary rubber — and even standard silicone — gives up. Its secret is in the recipe: heat stabilizers such as iron oxide and cerium compounds are blended into the silicone compound. These additives intercept the chemical reactions that heat uses to break rubber down, slowing aging and protecting the polymer network. The base chemistry helps too: silicone's silicon-oxygen backbone is naturally stronger against heat than the carbon backbone of organic rubbers. The result is a gasket material that stays flexible, keeps its shape, and holds its seal through years of hot service.
