FVMQ vs VMQ for Gaskets
Standard silicone (VMQ) and fluorosilicone (FVMQ) look the same and feel the same — but they behave very differently when fluids touch the seal:
Property | Standard Silicone (VMQ) | Fluorosilicone (FVMQ) |
|---|---|---|
Fuel Resistance | Poor — swells and softens quickly | Excellent — stays stable in gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel |
Oil Resistance | Poor — mineral oil makes it swell | Excellent — resists motor oil, lubricants, and grease |
Solvent Resistance | Poor to fair | Good to excellent (hydrocarbon solvents) |
Low-Temp Flexibility | Excellent (down to -60°C) | Excellent (down to -60°C) |
High-Temp Limit | Up to +230°C | Up to +200°C |
Weather / Ozone / UV | Excellent | Excellent |
Hot Water & Steam | Good | Poor — not recommended |
Mechanical Strength | Good | Average — lower tear strength |
Material Cost | Base level | 2–5 times higher than VMQ |
The rule is simple: if your gasket will touch fuel, oil, or solvents, VMQ will swell, go soft, and fail. FVMQ keeps silicone's wide temperature range and flexibility — and adds real resistance to fuels and oils. If there is no fluid contact, standard VMQ does the job at a lower cost. Pay for FVMQ only when the fluid demands it.
Fluid Compatibility for Gaskets
This chart shows how our FVMQ gaskets perform with common fluids. Ratings: Excellent = long service, minimal effect / Good = suitable for most uses / Fair = limited use, test first / Poor = not recommended.
Fluid | FVMQ Rating | Note |
|---|---|---|
Gasoline | Excellent | Very low swell, the core FVMQ strength |
Diesel | Excellent | Long-term immersion is fine |
Jet Fuel (Jet A, JP-5, JP-8) | Excellent | The original aerospace use for FVMQ |
Hydraulic Fluid (petroleum-based) | Good | Fine for most types; check for special synthetic fluids |
Motor Oil & Lubricants | Excellent | Minimal swelling, stable sealing force |
Coolant (glycol-based) | Good | Works well in most coolant mixtures |
Water (fresh or salt) | Fair | Long exposure can cause swelling |
Steam | Poor | Not recommended — use VMQ or EPDM instead |
One honest warning
FVMQ is weak against hot water, steam, ketones (like acetone), and non-petroleum brake fluids. For a pure water or steam line, standard VMQ is actually the better and cheaper choice. Tell us the exact fluid in your system — we will confirm compatibility before you order.
Typical FVMQ Gasket Applications
FVMQ gaskets go wherever fuels and oils meet wide temperatures:
Aerospace fuel flanges and tank access covers
the classic FVMQ job, from -60°C at altitude to hot-day ground service
Automotive transmission pans and oil seals
constant oil contact plus engine-bay heat
Engine valve covers and timing covers
hot oil mist and temperature cycling
Military vehicle fuel systems
meeting MIL-DTL-25988 / AMS-R-25988 requirements
Chemical processing equipment
pumps, valves, and flanges handling hydrocarbon solvents
Fuel pumps, sensors, and quick-connect fittings
small seals with zero room for failure
For these jobs, we supply FVMQ gaskets in Grades 40 to 80 (Shore A), cut from sheet or molded to your drawing.
What Is Fluorosilicone (FVMQ)?
Fluorosilicone — FVMQ for short — is a special member of the silicone rubber family. Its base is the same silicon-oxygen backbone as standard silicone, but with fluorine-containing side groups (trifluoropropyl groups) bonded into the polymer chain. That small chemical change makes a big practical difference: the material keeps the cold flexibility and heat stability of silicone, and gains the fuel and oil resistance of a fluorocarbon rubber. Engineers often call it the "hybrid" between VMQ and FKM — and it is the only elastomer that stays flexible at -60°C while sealing jet fuel.
