How Metal Detectable Silicone Works

Standard silicone rubber cannot be detected by metal detectors or X-ray machines. If a piece breaks off during production, it enters the product stream and becomes an invisible contaminant. Metal detectable silicone solves this problem.

The Simple Principle

At ZSR Silicone Parts, we add special metallic fillers into the silicone compound during mixing. These fillers are evenly dispersed throughout the rubber. When an O-ring or a fragment of it passes through a metal detector or X-ray system, the metallic additives create a signal that the machine can read.

Two Detection Methods

Metal Detection

The metallic fillers in the silicone respond to electromagnetic fields in standard metal detectors. Fragments as small as 2 mm can trigger the alarm.

X-Ray Inspection

The metallic additives absorb X-rays differently than food or plastic. This creates a visible shadow on the X-ray image, even when the fragment is inside a foil or metalized package.

Why Blue?

Most metal detectable O-rings are blue. Blue is a rare color in food products, so workers and optical sensors can spot a stray O-ring quickly. At ZSR, we offer blue as the standard color for metal detectable silicone, with black available on request.

Magnetic Separation

Some production lines use magnetic separators to catch metal fragments. The metallic fillers in ZSR's metal detectable silicone are attracted to magnets, so broken pieces can be pulled out of the product stream automatically.

Does It Change Performance?

At ZSR, we control the additive level carefully. The metal detectable fillers do not significantly change the heat resistance, elasticity, or chemical resistance of the silicone. The O-ring still seals as well as a standard silicone O-ring. The main difference is that it can be found if it breaks.

What Is Metal Detectable Silicone?

Metal detectable silicone is silicone rubber that contains special metallic additives. These additives are mixed into the rubber during production so the finished material can be found by metal detectors and X-ray machines. It is a safety material designed for industries where even a small rubber fragment lost in the product stream can cause serious problems.

Why Normal Silicone Cannot Be Found

Standard silicone rubber is made from silicon, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. These are all lightweight, non-metallic elements. A piece of standard silicone passing through a metal detector creates no signal. On an X-ray screen, it looks almost the same as food, water, or plastic. If a seal, gasket, or scraper made from standard silicone breaks during production, the fragments can enter the product and remain completely invisible to automatic inspection systems.

How ZSR Makes Silicone Detectable
