What Is Oil-Resistant / Fuel-Resistant Silicone?

Oil-resistant silicone is a special type of silicone rubber designed to survive contact with fuels, oils, and hydrocarbon solvents. Standard silicone rubber is excellent in heat, cold, and weather, but it has one major weakness: hydrocarbons. When regular silicone meets gasoline, diesel, or motor oil, the oil molecules enter the rubber and cause it to swell up like a sponge. The O-ring grows larger, softens, and eventually loses its seal.

How ZSR Makes Oil-Resistant Silicone

At ZSR Silicone Parts, we solve this problem with fluorosilicone (FVMQ). This material starts with the same silicon-oxygen backbone as standard silicone, but we replace some of the methyl side groups with trifluoropropyl groups. These fluorine-containing groups act like a shield. They repel hydrocarbon molecules, so fuel and oil cannot enter the rubber.

Key Properties of Oil-Resistant Silicone (FVMQ)
  • Temperature Range: -55°C to +200°C continuous. Some grades handle short-term peaks to +230°C.
  • Fuel Resistance: Excellent in gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and most petroleum products.
  • Oil Resistance: Excellent in mineral oils, synthetic lubricants, and hydraulic fluids.
  • Low-Temp Flexibility: Much better than FKM. Seals reliably at -55°C.
  • Hardness: 50 to 80 Shore A at ZSR. Most fuel seals use 60 to 75 Shore A.
  • Colors: Usually blue, black, brown, or red-brown. The fluorinated compound limits bright color options.
  • Weathering: Excellent ozone and UV resistance — same as standard silicone.
Limitations to Know

Oil-resistant silicone is not perfect for every chemical:

  • Poor in steam: Prolonged hot water or steam exposure can cause swelling.
  • Poor in ketones: Acetone, MEK, and similar solvents attack FVMQ.
  • Poor in strong acids and bases: Concentrated acids and caustic chemicals degrade the material.
  • Higher cost: FVMQ raw materials cost more than standard VMQ. It is an investment for demanding applications.

Oil-resistant silicone — specifically fluorosilicone (FVMQ) — is the material you choose when you need the impossible combination: the fuel resistance of a fluorocarbon rubber plus the cold flexibility of a silicone. It costs more than standard silicone, but in fuel systems, aerospace engines, and arctic vehicles, it is the only material that works.
