How the Matching Process Works

No matter which method you choose, the process is the same at ZSR:

  • Receive your target: We log your color reference into our system.
  • First match: Our technician mixes a test batch, usually within 1 to 3 days.
  • Sample molding: We mold 5 to 10 sample O-rings in the test color.
  • Your approval: You check the samples under your lighting. If they are good, we lock the formula.
  • Production: We scale the approved formula to your full order.
Lead Time
  • First-time custom color: Add 3 to 5 days to production.
  • Repeat order using an approved formula: No extra delay.

Color Impact on Performance

At ZSR, we believe you should know the full story. The color you choose can affect how the O-ring performs in your application.

Heat Resistance

Some pigments handle heat better than others.

  • Black and dark colors: Excellent heat stability. Carbon black and dark organic pigments can handle +230°C without fading.
  • White and light colors: Good heat stability. Titanium dioxide is very stable.
  • Bright reds, oranges, and yellows: Good up to +200°C. Some organic pigments may fade or shift slightly if exposed to +230°C for long periods.
  • Fluorescent and neon colors: Moderate heat stability. Best kept below +180°C for continuous use.
  • Metallic colors (silver, gold, pearl): Variable. The metallic flakes can reflect heat but may also create weak points in the rubber. ZSR tests these carefully.
UV and Sunlight Resistance

If your O-ring sits outdoors or under strong indoor lights, color matters for longevity.

  • Black: Best UV resistance. The carbon black absorbs UV rays and protects the silicone underneath.
  • Dark blue, dark green, dark gray: Very good UV resistance.
  • White: Good UV resistance. Titanium dioxide reflects UV light.
  • Bright and light colors: Fair UV resistance. Reds and yellows may fade faster than dark colors in direct sunlight.
  • Clear / Transparent: Fair UV resistance. No pigment means no UV protection. May yellow slightly over years of sun exposure.
FDA and Medical Compliance

Not every pigment is safe for food or medical contact.

  • Industrial-grade colors: Wide freedom. Almost any pigment is possible.
  • FDA food-grade colors: ZSR uses only pigments listed in FDA 21 CFR 178.3297 or approved for food-contact rubber. Some very bright, neon, or metallic colors are not available in food grade because the pigments are not FDA-approved.
  • Medical-grade colors: Even more restricted. We use a short list of biocompatible, low-extractable pigments. If you need a custom medical color, send us the request early so we can check pigment availability.
Electrical Properties
  • Black (carbon black based): Can be slightly conductive. The carbon black particles lower electrical resistance. For most sealing jobs, this is not a problem. But if you need exact electrical insulation, tell ZSR and we can use a non-conductive black pigment instead.
  • All other colors: Electrically neutral. No effect on insulation.
Chemical Interaction

Silicone pigments are locked inside the rubber matrix. They do not leach out during normal use. However, in very aggressive chemical environments (strong acids, strong bases, or some solvents), the pigment itself is not the weak point — the silicone base is. Color has very little effect on chemical resistance.

Color Consistency for Large Orders

When you order 100,000 custom-colored O-rings from ZSR, the first piece and the last piece must look the same. Here is how we ensure that.

Pre-Dispersed Masterbatch Technology

ZSR does not add raw pigment powder to the silicone. We use pre-dispersed color masterbatches. These are concentrated color pastes where the pigment is already evenly mixed into a liquid silicone carrier. When we add the masterbatch to the main compound, the color spreads uniformly with no clumps or streaks. This is the foundation of consistent color.

Colorimeter Control

We measure color with a digital colorimeter, not just by eye. Every batch is checked against:

  • Your approved color standard (saved in our system)
  • Delta E value — the numerical difference between the batch and the standard
ZSR's internal limits:
  • Standard orders: Delta E < 1.5
  • Premium orders: Delta E < 1.0

If a batch falls outside the limit, we adjust the formula before production begins.

Standard Color Boards

After you approve a custom color, ZSR keeps a physical color board in our archive. This board is a cured silicone sample with your exact approved shade. If you place a repeat order six months or two years later, we match the new batch against this saved board. This eliminates color drift over time.

Same-Lot Production for Large Orders

For orders over 50,000 pieces, ZSR recommends mixing all the color compound in one batch or from the same masterbatch lot. This guarantees the highest consistency. If your order must be split into multiple shipments, we produce all the compound at once and store it under controlled conditions until needed.

Visual Inspection

Even with digital measurement, every operator performs a visual check under standard daylight lamps. This catches surface defects, contamination, or color streaks that numbers alone might miss.

What You Can Do to Help
01

Send a physical sample

Photos and screens can lie. A physical color sample is always the best reference.

02

Tell us the lighting

Colors look different under warm yellow light, cool white LED, or natural daylight. Tell us your inspection lighting so we can match under the same conditions.

03

Approve the range

Silicone is rubber, not plastic. A slight variation is normal. When you approve the first sample, you are approving a small acceptable range, not an exact mathematical point.

What Is Custom Colors Silicone?

Custom colors silicone is silicone rubber that has been colored to match a specific requirement that is not in our standard stock. At ZSR, our standard stock colors are black, white, red, and blue. Everything else is custom — whether it is a Pantone code, a RAL number, a physical sample, or simply a color you describe.

How It Is Different from Stock Colors

Stock colors are pre-mixed in large batches and kept in inventory. The formula never changes. We can pull the material and start molding immediately. Custom colors are mixed fresh for your order. We start with natural (uncolored) silicone and add pigments until we hit your target shade.

Why Choose Custom Colors?
  • Brand identity: Your O-ring matches your company colors exactly.
  • Color coding: Different colors identify different sizes, pressure ratings, or fluid types in your equipment.
  • Repair and replacement: You need to match the color of an existing seal that is no longer available.
  • Aesthetic requirements: Consumer products, medical devices, and food equipment often need specific colors for appearance or safety.
  • Multi-part assemblies: Your O-ring must match a plastic housing, a metal finish, or a label color.
How ZSR Creates Custom Colors

At ZSR Silicone Parts, the process is practical and controlled:

  • Receive your reference: You send a Pantone code, RAL code, physical sample, or color description.
  • Base selection: We choose the right silicone grade — industrial, food, or medical — in its natural, uncolored form.
  • Pigment mixing: We add liquid pigment masterbatches to the base. These are concentrated color pastes that mix evenly without clumping.
  • Test and adjust: Our technician compares the mixed sample to your reference under controlled lighting. We tweak the formula until the match is close.
  • Sample molding: We mold actual O-rings because cured silicone looks slightly different from the raw liquid.
  • Your approval: You review the physical samples. If they pass, we save the formula permanently.
  • Production: The approved formula is used for your full order and saved for future repeat orders.
Key Properties
  • Temperature Range: Same as the base silicone — typically -60°C to +230°C. Note that some bright or fluorescent pigments may reduce continuous heat resistance by 5°C to 10°C.
  • Hardness: 10 to 90 Shore A. Color pigments do not change hardness.
  • Elasticity: Same as uncolored silicone. The amount of pigment is too small to affect flexibility.
  • Colors: Any shade achievable within silicone chemistry. Very few colors are truly impossible.
  • Safety: Food-grade and medical-grade custom colors use only approved, non-toxic pigments.
Limitations to Know
  • Setup cost: The first custom color order includes a one-time color development fee. This covers the technician's time, test materials, and sample molding. Repeat orders using the same approved formula do not have this fee.
  • Minimum order: Custom colors require a minimum batch size to justify the mixing setup. At ZSR, this is usually 1,000 to 5,000 pieces depending on O-ring size.
  • Exact match: Silicone is rubber with a matte surface and slight natural translucency. It will never look exactly like glossy paint or hard plastic. ZSR aims for a close visual match, typically within Delta E 1.5.
  • Metallic and neon colors: Some extreme colors (true chrome, holographic, or certain neon shades) are difficult or impossible in silicone because the required pigments or effects do not exist in rubber-grade form. If you request an unusual color, ZSR will tell you honestly what is achievable.
Summary

Custom colors silicone is simply silicone rubber made to your exact color specification. It is not a different material — it is the same high-performance silicone you trust, with the added benefit of looking exactly the way you want. At ZSR, we have produced custom colors for automotive brands, medical device companies, food equipment manufacturers, and consumer product lines. Send us your color target and we will show you what is possible.
