What Is Platinum Cured Silicone?

Platinum cured silicone is a type of silicone rubber that uses a platinum-based catalyst to turn liquid or solid raw material into a finished elastic part. It is also called addition cure silicone because of the chemical reaction involved.

How It Works

In a platinum curing system, the silicone polymer contains vinyl groups (carbon double bonds). The platinum catalyst helps these vinyl groups connect with silicon-hydrogen bonds on a cross-linker. When heat is applied, the molecules link together to form a solid, flexible rubber network.

The key difference from peroxide curing is this: the reaction creates no waste products. In peroxide curing, the peroxide breaks down into free radicals that attack the polymer chains. This process leaves behind organic acids, alcohols, or other small molecules as by-products. These by-products must be removed by post-curing in an oven for several hours.

With platinum curing, the reaction is clean. What goes in is what comes out — just pure silicone rubber.
