Platinum Cured vs Peroxide Cured
At ZSR Silicone Parts, we offer both curing systems, but they serve different purposes. The table below shows the real differences you need to know.
Feature | Platinum Cured | Peroxide Cured |
|---|---|---|
Curing Chemistry | Addition cure — uses platinum catalyst. No by-products. | Free radical cure — uses organic peroxides. Creates by-products. |
Odor & Taste | None. Completely neutral. | May have slight residue odor unless post-cured. |
Purity Level | Very high. No volatile by-products. | Good, but requires post-curing to remove residues. |
Transparency | Excellent. Can make crystal-clear parts. | Good, but usually slightly hazy or yellowish. |
FDA / Food Safety | Ideal. First choice for food and medical contact. | Acceptable for food grade after proper post-curing. |
Medical Grade Suitability | Preferred. Meets USP Class VI and ISO 10993 easily. | Possible, but requires extra validation steps. |
Production Speed | Fast. Cures at lower temperatures or quickly at standard heat. | Standard. Requires higher heat and longer cure time. |
Cost | Higher raw material cost. | Lower raw material cost. |
Shelf Life of Raw Material | Shorter — platinum catalyst can be poisoned by certain contaminants. | Longer — more stable in storage. |
Best For | Food, medical, baby care, high-purity industrial, transparent parts. | General industrial seals, automotive, large parts, cost-sensitive projects. |
ZSR's Recommendation:
If your O-ring touches food, medicine, or human skin, choose platinum cured. If you need a standard industrial seal and want to save cost, peroxide cured is still a solid choice. At ZSR, we can help you decide based on your end use and budget.
Why Platinum Cured Matters
Platinum curing is not just a technical detail — it directly affects the safety, appearance, and performance of your O-ring. Here is why ZSR customers ask for platinum cured silicone:
No Smell, No Taste
Because platinum curing creates no chemical by-products, the finished O-ring has zero odor and zero taste. This is critical for coffee machines, water bottles, baby products, and any food equipment where smell or flavor contamination is unacceptable.
Higher Purity
Platinum cured silicone contains no peroxide residues, no acidic by-products, and no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This makes it the cleanest silicone option available. For medical devices and pharmaceutical equipment, this purity is not optional — it is required.
Better Transparency
If you need a clear O-ring for visual inspection or light transmission, platinum curing is the only way to get true optical clarity. Peroxide curing often leaves a slight haze or yellow tint that ruins transparency.
Faster, Cleaner Production
Platinum cured LSR and HCR can cure quickly without the need for long post-curing ovens. This means faster production, lower energy use, and more consistent batch quality at ZSR.
Safer for Sensitive Applications
In medical and baby care markets, regulators and customers expect platinum cured material. It is the industry standard for any silicone part that contacts the human body or consumable products.
Stable Color
Platinum cured silicone holds color better over time. Bright colors stay vivid, and white stays white instead of yellowing. This is important for consumer products and brand-matching seals.
Typical Applications
ZSR manufactures platinum cured silicone O-rings for industries where safety, purity, and appearance matter most.
Industry | Application | Why Platinum Cured |
|---|---|---|
Food & Beverage | Coffee machines, espresso makers, water dispensers, juice extractors, food packaging seals | No taste or odor transfer. FDA compliant. Safe for hot water and steam. |
Medical Devices | Respiratory masks, IV connectors, dialysis equipment, surgical instruments, drug delivery pumps | Meets USP Class VI and ISO 10993. Can be sterilized by gamma, ETO, or autoclave. |
Baby & Childcare | Baby bottle seals, sippy cups, breast pump parts, baby food containers | Highest purity. No harmful residues. Parents and regulators trust platinum cured. |
Pharmaceutical | Bioreactor seals, mixing tank gaskets, filling machine O-rings | No chemical contamination risk. Compatible with drug manufacturing standards. |
Cosmetics & Personal Care | Lotion pump seals, cream jar gaskets, soap dispenser O-rings | Clean, neutral material that does not react with beauty products. |
High-Purity Industrial | Semiconductor equipment, laboratory instruments, pure water systems | No particle shedding. No volatile outgassing. Maintains system purity. |
Automotive (Interior) | Cabin air systems, interior lighting, dashboard sensors | Low VOC emissions meet automotive interior air quality standards. |
What Is Platinum Cured Silicone?
Platinum cured silicone is a type of silicone rubber that uses a platinum-based catalyst to turn liquid or solid raw material into a finished elastic part. It is also called addition cure silicone because of the chemical reaction involved.
How It Works
In a platinum curing system, the silicone polymer contains vinyl groups (carbon double bonds). The platinum catalyst helps these vinyl groups connect with silicon-hydrogen bonds on a cross-linker. When heat is applied, the molecules link together to form a solid, flexible rubber network.
The key difference from peroxide curing is this: the reaction creates no waste products. In peroxide curing, the peroxide breaks down into free radicals that attack the polymer chains. This process leaves behind organic acids, alcohols, or other small molecules as by-products. These by-products must be removed by post-curing in an oven for several hours.
With platinum curing, the reaction is clean. What goes in is what comes out — just pure silicone rubber.

Key Properties
Platinum cured silicone is simply the cleanest, safest way to make silicone O-rings. It costs more than peroxide cured material, but for applications where purity, transparency, and human safety matter, it is the only logical choice. At ZSR, we have the material, the equipment, and the quality systems to deliver platinum cured O-rings that meet global food and medical standards.
