FDA Compliance Explained
At ZSR Silicone Parts, FDA Food Grade means our silicone O-rings meet FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 — the U.S. regulation for rubber articles that touch food again and again. Here is what that means in plain language.
What 21 CFR 177.2600 Requires
This rule sets two main requirements for food-contact silicone:
Allowed Ingredients Only
The silicone compound must use only raw materials that the FDA has approved for repeated food contact. This includes the base polymer, fillers, pigments, and curing agents.
Extractables Limits
When tested, the O-ring must not release too much material into food simulants. The standard tests use distilled water and n-hexane under controlled temperature and time. The extractable matter must stay below the FDA limits.
How ZSR Meets These Requirements
Formula Control
Every food-grade compound at ZSR is built from an FDA-approved recipe. We do not swap fillers or pigments without checking the FDA list first.
Post-Curing
All food-grade O-rings receive a secondary oven bake at 180°C–200°C for several hours. This removes residual volatiles and stabilizes the material before it reaches you.
Platinum Curing Preferred
We use platinum-cured silicone for most food-grade orders because it leaves no peroxide by-products. This gives lower extractables and a cleaner, odor-free part.
Testing on File
ZSR keeps third-party test reports for extractables and migration. We can share these with your quality team on request.
Important Note:
FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 is a U.S. standard. If you also sell in Europe, you may need LFGB or EU 10/2011 compliance. ZSR can produce dual-certified compounds that pass both FDA and LFGB testing. Just tell us your target market when you order.

What Is FDA Food Grade Silicone?
FDA Food Grade silicone is silicone rubber that has been formulated, tested, and produced to meet U.S. food-contact safety rules. It is the same basic material as industrial silicone — flexible, heat-resistant, and durable — but it is held to a higher standard of purity and cleanliness.
