Black vs White: More Than Just Color

At ZSR Silicone Parts, black and white are our most popular color choices. But the color is not just about looks. The pigments used to make black and white silicone also change some material properties.

Feature

Black Silicone

White Silicone

Main Pigment

Carbon black

Titanium dioxide (TiOâ‚‚)

UV Resistance

Excellent — carbon black absorbs UV light and protects the rubber

Good — TiO₂ reflects UV but does not absorb it as strongly

Heat Resistance

Slightly better — carbon black acts as a mild heat stabilizer

Standard — same as base silicone

Electrical Property

Slightly conductive — carbon black can lower resistivity slightly

Insulator — standard electrical properties

Appearance

Hides dirt and stains well

Looks clean and bright — shows contamination easily

Typical Uses

Outdoor equipment, automotive, industrial machinery, electronics

Medical devices, food equipment, cleanroom applications, consumer products

Cost

Standard — TiO₂ is slightly more expensive but the difference is small

Why Black Is Better for Outdoor and Hot Applications

The carbon black pigment in black silicone does more than add color. It acts like a tiny UV shield. It absorbs ultraviolet light from the sun and converts it to heat, which prevents the UV from breaking down the silicone polymer chains. This means black O-rings usually last longer in direct sunlight and outdoor weather than white O-rings.

At ZSR, we recommend black for:

  • Automotive under-hood seals
  • Outdoor electrical enclosures
  • Solar equipment
  • Any application with long-term sun exposure
Why White Is Preferred for Clean and Sensitive Applications

White silicone uses titanium dioxide pigment. This pigment is inert, non-toxic, and widely accepted in food and medical applications. White O-rings look clean and make it easy to spot dirt, dust, or contamination during inspection.

At ZSR, we recommend white for:

  • Medical devices and surgical instruments
  • Food processing equipment
  • Pharmaceutical machinery
  • Cleanroom environments
  • Consumer products where appearance matters
Important Note on Conductivity

The carbon black in black silicone can make the material slightly more conductive than white silicone. In most sealing applications, this difference is too small to matter. But if your application requires exact electrical insulation, ask ZSR for a specific test report on the resistivity of our black compound.

Color Consistency Control

When you order 10,000 black O-rings from ZSR, every piece should look the same. Color consistency is critical for brand appearance, quality control, and customer trust. Here is how ZSR ensures batch-to-batch color matching.

Pre-Dispersed Color Masterbatches

At ZSR, we do not dump raw pigment powder into the silicone. We use pre-dispersed color masterbatches. These are concentrated color pastes where the pigment is already evenly mixed into a silicone carrier. When we add the masterbatch to the main compound, the color disperses uniformly. This prevents pigment clumps and spots that can cause uneven coloring.

Color Measurement with Instruments

ZSR uses a colorimeter (also called a spectrophotometer) to measure color numerically. Instead of judging color by eye, we measure:

  • L value:* Lightness (0 = pure black, 100 = pure white)
  • a value:* Red-green axis
  • b value:* Blue-yellow axis

For each standard color, we keep a master color standard on file. Every new batch is measured against this standard. We accept the batch only if the color difference (Delta E) is below our internal limit — typically Delta E < 1.5 for standard orders and Delta E < 1.0 for premium orders.

Batch-to-Batch Control

For large orders that ship in multiple batches, ZSR:

  • Keeps the same masterbatch lot number for the entire order when possible.
  • Records the exact color formula and pigment percentage for each batch.
  • Compares each new batch against the first batch using the colorimeter.
  • Adjusts the formula slightly if needed to match the previous batch.
Visual Inspection

Even with instruments, ZSR operators perform visual checks under standard daylight lamps. This catches any surface defects, color streaks, or contamination that instruments might miss.

What Customers Should Know

Natural color variation

Silicone is a natural material. Slight color variation between batches is normal and does not affect performance.

Color matching

If you need an exact color match to a Pantone code or a physical sample, send us the reference. We can create a custom masterbatch and match it within Delta E < 1.0.

Large orders

For orders over 50,000 pieces, we recommend producing all pieces from the same masterbatch lot to ensure maximum consistency.

What Is Black / White Silicone?

Black and white silicone are the most common colors of silicone rubber used for O-rings. They are not different materials — they are the same silicone rubber with different pigments added during mixing.

How Black Silicone Is Made

At ZSR, we make black silicone by adding carbon black pigment to the raw silicone compound. Carbon black is a very fine powder made from burned hydrocarbons. It is one of the oldest and most stable pigments in the rubber industry. It disperses easily into silicone and gives a deep, solid black color that does not fade over time.

How White Silicone Is Made

We make white silicone by adding titanium dioxide (TiOâ‚‚) to the raw compound. Titanium dioxide is a white mineral powder used in paints, plastics, and cosmetics. It is safe for food and medical contact and gives a bright, clean white color.

Are They Different from Colored Silicone?

Not really. The base silicone polymer is the same. The only difference is the pigment. However, the pigment choice can have small effects:

  • Black (carbon black): Slightly better UV resistance. May have very slight electrical conductivity.
  • White (titanium dioxide): Neutral electrical properties. Preferred for purity-critical applications.
Performance

Both black and white silicone O-rings at ZSR perform the same in terms of:

  • Temperature resistance (-60°C to +230°C)
  • Flexibility and elasticity
  • Compression set recovery
  • Chemical resistance to water, steam, and ozone
  • FDA and medical grade availability
Why Most Customers Choose Black or White
  • Black: Hides dirt, resists UV fading, looks professional in industrial settings, and is often the lowest-cost color because carbon black is inexpensive.
  • White: Looks clean and medical, makes contamination visible, matches food and pharma equipment aesthetics, and is preferred for platinum-cured medical grades.
