Pantone Matching Process

At ZSR Silicone Parts, we match silicone O-ring colors to your exact Pantone code. Here is how the process works from start to finish.

You Send the Pantone Code

Provide us with the Pantone Solid Coated number (for example, Pantone 185 C). If you do not have a Pantone code, you can send a physical sample, a photo, or a color swatch from your brand guide.

ZSR Color Matching

Our technicians mix silicone pigment pastes to match your target color. We use pre-dispersed color masterbatches to ensure even mixing. The first match is usually done in 1 to 3 business days.

Sample Approval

We mold a small sample batch (usually 5 to 10 pieces) and send you photos or physical samples for approval. You can check the color under your own lighting conditions.

Color Adjustment

If the first sample is not perfect, we adjust the formula and send a revised sample. ZSR allows up to 3 rounds of color adjustment at no extra charge.

Production

Once you approve the color, we record the exact formula in our system. This ensures that future orders match the same shade. Production then proceeds using your approved color standard.

Color Tolerance

ZSR targets a Delta E of less than 1.5 compared to your Pantone reference. In practice, most batches fall within Delta E 1.0. Small variations are normal because silicone is a rubber material, not paint or plastic. Surface finish, thickness, and lighting can all affect how the color looks.

When to Choose Pantone Colors at ZSR
  • You need the O-ring to match your company brand colors.
  • Your product line uses color coding (for example, red rings for high pressure, green for low pressure).

Color Performance Notes

Not all pigments behave the same way in silicone. At ZSR, we want you to understand how color choice can affect performance.

Heat Resistance and Color

Some bright pigments are less stable at high temperatures than carbon black or titanium white.

  • Dark colors (black, dark blue, dark green): Best heat stability. Usually no problem up to +230°C.
  • Bright reds, oranges, and yellows: Good up to +200°C. Some organic pigments may fade slightly at +230°C over long periods.
  • Fluorescent colors: Moderate heat stability. Best kept below +180°C for continuous use.
  • Pastel colors: Generally stable, but some light pigments can shift slightly after repeated heat cycles.
UV Resistance
  • Black: Excellent UV resistance. Carbon black absorbs UV light and protects the rubber.
  • White: Good UV resistance. Titanium dioxide reflects UV.
  • Bright colors (red, yellow, green, blue): Fair to good. Some pigments fade faster than others in direct sunlight. If your O-ring will be outdoors for years, ZSR recommends darker shades or adding a UV stabilizer.
  • Custom mixed colors: We can adjust the pigment blend to improve UV stability if you tell us the application environment.
FDA and Medical Grade Compatibility

Not all pigments are approved for food or medical contact.

  • Food-grade Pantone colors: ZSR uses only FDA-listed pigments for food-grade orders. Some very bright or neon colors may not be available in food-grade versions because the pigments are not on the FDA approved list.
  • Medical-grade Pantone colors: We restrict medical-grade custom colors to a pre-approved palette of biocompatible pigments. If you need a specific Pantone color for a medical device, send us the code early so we can check pigment availability.
Color and Electrical Properties
  • Black: The carbon black pigment can make the material slightly conductive. In most cases this is too small to matter. But if your application needs exact electrical insulation, tell ZSR and we can use a non-conductive black pigment instead.
  • Other colors: Generally neutral electrically.
Color Consistency on Large Orders

For orders over 50,000 pieces, ZSR recommends producing the entire order from the same masterbatch lot. This guarantees the best batch-to-batch consistency. If the order must be split into multiple shipments, we save the approved color standard and match each new batch against it.

What Is Pantone Colors Silicone?

Pantone colors silicone is silicone rubber that has been colored to match a specific Pantone code. Pantone is a global color matching system used by designers and manufacturers to communicate exact colors. When you order a Pantone-colored silicone O-ring from ZSR, you are not choosing from our stock colors. You are asking us to create a custom color that matches your brand, your product, or your specification.

How It Is Different from Standard Colors

Standard silicone colors — black, white, red, blue — are pre-mixed in large batches and kept in stock. The formula never changes. Pantone colors are mixed individually for each customer. The process starts with a natural silicone base and adds precise amounts of pigment until the color matches your target.

Why Use Pantone Colors?
  • Brand consistency: Your O-ring matches the exact color of your logo, packaging, or product housing.
  • Color coding: Different colors identify different sizes, pressure ratings, or fluid types in your equipment.
  • Consumer appeal: In food, medical, and consumer products, color affects buying decisions. A well-matched color looks professional.
  • Assembly guidance: In complex devices, a specific color can help assembly workers identify the correct seal quickly.
Key Properties
  • Temperature Range: Same as the base silicone — usually -60°C to +230°C. Note that some bright pigments may reduce heat stability slightly.
  • Hardness: 10 to 90 Shore A. Color does not change hardness.
  • Colors: Any Pantone Solid Coated color, plus custom matches to physical samples or RAL codes.
  • Elasticity: Same as uncolored silicone. The pigment loading is too small to affect flexibility.
  • Safety: Food-grade and medical-grade Pantone colors use only approved pigments.
Limitations
  • Minimum order: Custom colors require a setup process. ZSR usually asks for a minimum of 1,000 to 5,000 pieces for Pantone orders, depending on O-ring size.
  • Color development fee: The first order includes a one-time charge for color matching and sample molding. Repeat orders using the same formula do not have this fee.
  • Exact match limits: Silicone is a rubber, not a plastic or paint. It has a matte surface and some natural translucency. A perfect match to a glossy Pantone swatch is not always possible, but ZSR gets very close — typically within Delta E 1.5.
  • Not all Pantone colors are possible: Some metallic, neon, or fluorescent Pantone colors use special inks that cannot be reproduced in silicone. If you send us an unusual Pantone code, we will tell you honestly if it is achievable.
