Silicone O-Ring Material Selection Guide: VMQ vs FVMQ vs LSR

Choosing a silicone O-ring material comes down to three questions:

What does the seal touch? How hot or cold does it get?

Does it need food or medical certification?

Answer these, and the right material — VMQ, FVMQ, or LSR — usually picks itself.

Why Material Selection Matters

All silicone O-rings look similar. But the wrong material choice is the #1 reason silicone seals fail early:

  • Standard silicone in an oil line → swells and leaks
  • Peroxide-cured silicone in a food machine → fails the audit
  • Wrong hardness on a rough flange → leaks from day one

Silicone’s wide temperature range is its biggest strength. If your seal lives outdoors, in a freezer, or near an oven, silicone is usually on the shortlist.

Don’t Forget Hardness

Material is only half the spec. Hardness matters just as much:

  • 50–60 Shore A â€” better sealing on rough or uneven surfaces, lower compression force
  • 70 Shore A â€” the industry standard for O-rings; good all-round choice
  • 80 Shore A â€” resists extrusion in higher-pressure static seals

Common Selection Mistakes We See

  1. Specifying “silicone” without the cure type â€” food-grade parts need platinum cure in writing.
  2. Using VMQ in oil because “it is just a little splash” â€” switch to FVMQ.
  3. Copying an FKM spec into a cold environment â€” FKM stiffens below -20°C; use FVMQ.
  4. Choosing LSR for 5,000 parts â€” tooling cost kills the budget; HTV is fine.
  5. Forgetting compression set â€” for seals that stay compressed for years, ask for low-compression-set compound.

A: No. FVMQ comes closest for harsh environments, but it costs 3–5× more and is not food grade. Matching material to application is always cheaper in the long run.
