What Are PMQ and PVMQ?

Both are members of the silicone family with phenyl groups added to the polymer chain:

  • PMQ — phenyl methyl silicone
  • PVMQ — phenyl vinyl methyl silicone (the more common, easier-to-process version used today)

Standard silicone (VMQ) is built from methyl and vinyl groups. Replacing some methyl groups with larger phenyl groups stops the rubber from crystallizing in extreme cold. The result: flexibility where other rubbers — and even standard silicone — turn hard and brittle.

In practice, when someone says “low-temperature silicone,” they usually mean PVMQ.

Why Cold Is a Problem for Rubber

Rubber seals work because they are flexible. Cold attacks this in two ways:

  1. Glass transition — below a certain temperature, rubber becomes glass-like and cracks.
  2. Crystallization — standard silicone slowly crystallizes around -50°C to -60°C and stiffens, even before glass transition.

A stiff O-ring cannot follow the surface it seals. The result is leakage — often only discovered when the equipment reaches the cold environment.

Where PVMQ Is Used

  • Aerospace — seals for high-altitude and space-adjacent equipment, where -55°C and below is routine
  • Arctic and cold-climate equipment — outdoor machinery, sensors, and enclosures in polar regions
  • Refrigeration and cold chain — seals for deep-freeze and ultra-low temperature storage
  • Military and outdoor electronics — equipment that must start and seal at extreme cold

Where PVMQ Is NOT Needed

  • Normal cold (-40°C and up) — standard VMQ handles it. Do not pay for phenyl content you do not need.
  • Cold + oil contact — PVMQ’s oil resistance is as poor as VMQ’s. For oil in the cold, look at FVMQ (down to -60°C) and check your real temperature requirement.
  • Tight-budget general sealing — PVMQ costs more. Use it when the cold spec demands it.

A: Slightly lower mechanical strength, but for static sealing this rarely matters. Flexibility at temperature is what counts.
