RTV Silicone vs Molded Silicone Gaskets: Which One Should You Use?

RTV silicone is a paste that cures at room temperature, applied by hand or robot to form a gasket directly on the part (form-in-place).

Molded silicone gaskets are pre-made solid seals.

RTV suits large housings and on-site sealing; molded gaskets suit repeat production, precise dimensions, and reliable replacement.

What Is RTV Silicone?

RTV means Room Temperature Vulcanizing. It is silicone rubber supplied as a soft paste or liquid in a cartridge, tube, or pail. You apply it to a surface, and it cures into solid rubber at room temperature — no oven, no mold.

Common forms you will see:

  • RTV gasket maker — the squeeze-tube or cartridge product used on engine covers and housings
  • FIPG (Formed-In-Place Gasket) — RTV dispensed by robot onto a part, cured before assembly
  • CIPG (Cured-In-Place Gasket) — dispensed onto a part, cured, then shipped as a ready-to-assemble component

RTV is convenient. But it is a different product from a molded gasket, and choosing between them is a real engineering decision.

What Is a Molded Silicone Gasket?

A molded gasket is made in a tool: solid silicone compound is shaped and cured in a heated mold (compression or injection molding).

The gasket arrives as a finished, dimensionally controlled part —

you place it in a groove and tighten the bolts.

When RTV Makes Sense

  • Very large housings — a molded gasket for a 2-meter enclosure is expensive to tool; dispensing a bead is not
  • Low volumes — prototypes, service parts, one-off machines: no mold cost
  • Complex 3D surfaces — the bead follows any flange path, including corners and split lines
  • Field service and repair — mechanics can reseal a gearbox or pump anywhere in the world with a cartridge

When a Molded Gasket Is the Better Choice

  • Repeat production — once volume justifies the mold, cost per part drops fast
  • Precision sealing — groove + controlled compression gives designed, reliable squeeze; RTV bead thickness varies
  • Removable/serviceable joints — a molded gasket can be designed for repeated assembly; RTV must be cleaned off and re-applied every time
  • Cleanliness requirements — food, medical, and optics assemblies cannot risk excess paste squeeze-out inside the product
  • Compression-set-critical seals — molded, post-cured silicone holds sealing force for years; RTV relaxes faster

Tips from ZSR: A common cost trap: RTV looks free of tooling cost, but at 1,000+ parts the labor, cure time, and squeeze-out waste often exceed the cost of a simple compression mold. Ask us to quote both — the crossover point surprises many buyers.

A Note on Performance

RTV silicones are good materials, but they are not the same rubber as molded HTV/LSR silicone:

  • Lower tensile and tear strength
  • Higher compression set (the seal “relaxes” — bolted joints often need re-torquing)
  • Adhesive grades bond to the flange — great for sealing, harder for service

If your joint is opened for maintenance more than once or twice a year, a molded gasket almost always wins on lifetime cost and reliability.

How to Decide: Three Questions

  1. How many parts per year? Under a few hundred → RTV often fine. Thousands → quote a mold.
  2. How precise must the seal be? Designed compression, tight leak spec → molded. General dust/splash sealing → RTV acceptable.
  3. Will the joint be reopened? Yes, regularly → molded gasket. Sealed for life → either works.

A: Same family, different chemistry. RTV cures by moisture or condensation reaction at room temperature; molded silicone is heat-cured HTV or LSR. Molded material is stronger and more consistent.
